I'm going to tell you about a great resource that helped me on the way (... or if you can't wait click here)... but I want you to know I'm pretty useless when it comes to DIY so if I can do it, anyone can! :)
So why build a chicken coop in the first place? After all I'm certainly no farmer!
Well, like me, you may be feeling the pinch thanks to the good old recession, so I started to think of ways to save some money and become a little more self-sufficient.
I saw a piece on the local news about a family who'd set up their own chicken coop in their backyard. They were saving money, getting some delicious fresh eggs, some great fertilizer and even making some money by selling the eggs to folks in their town.
"I can do that!" I thought to myself. Little did I know it wouldn't be that easy...

So I got together some wood and wire mesh and strode out into the garden... I wasn't going to return to the house until I had my own chicken coop!
I got to work. 3 hours later...
My hands were bleeding, I was tangled in wire mesh and I had a chicken coop that can only be called a disaster.
I wish I'd taken a picture to show you - you'd laugh so hard.
I trudged back to the house and was met by my wife giving me a sympathetic (yet vaguely 'smug' look). I was grumpy so I disappeared to the spare room and fired up the PC for some therapeutic DVD shopping.
My chicken coop ambitions were thwarted, it just wasn't as easy as I'd been told.
Whil browsing amazon, I decided to do some chicken coop research. There was a lot of 'info' but very few thorough plans.
I wanted something I could follow along with.
That's when I came across this little downloadable book...

The book's pretty cheap so I purchased it and in minutes had it printing out from my PC.
This was it! I was determined to make things right.
I retired that evening with the book, determined to create the ultimate chicken coop in the morning...

The next day - I had to succeed...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As the cockerel crowed I jumped out of bed and grabbed the plans I'd printed out the night before (I think my wife thought I was possessed!)
Now I knew where I'd gone wrong I got to work with eagerness and before my Sunday lunch was ready... I had a chicken coop, fresh, shiny and new.
What's more I also knew how to maintain it and make sure I got some delicious eggs out of it. I couldn't wait to get it going.
Fast forward months later and here I am with my own successful chicken coop. Each morning we have fantastic eggs with our fry-up but more a chicken coop has so many other advantages, stuff I'd never even thought of.
Anyway, I highly recommend building your own in these penny-pinching times so why not use the same guide I did...
I can tell you it contains the clearest plans I could find.
If you build one, please come back to this blog and leave your comments below.
I'd love to hear some success stories...
